Shadowing

Observing a doctor in his or her office is
called "shadowing" and can give you a good
idea about what actually happens from day to
day in the career.  It will serve as a better
representation than a weekly dose of "ER" or
"Grey's Anatomy" on television.

AMSA at Marquette University hopes to
provide this service to its members.  We plan
to create a list of physicians which members
can utilize and obtain necessary hours of
experience during the academic year.  As
many of you will soon discover, finding
physicians in the area to shadow is not an
easy task.  This is why we are working to
provide this service for you.
Hands on Experience

First Aid Basics and CPR Certification
Anyone who is interested in the medical field
would greatly benefit in obtaining
certification in First Aid and CPR.  Both life
saving techniques are helpful and crucial to
have in any emergency situation.  Most
individuals do not sign up for the classes due
to scheduling conflicts or transportation
limitations.  AMSA at Marquette University
hopes to provide its members with
on-campus access to these classes.

Volunteer Services
Required on the National and Local level,
volunteering is an essential component to
AMSA membership.  You can dedicate your
time on an individual basis or take advantage
of group opportunities that our chapter is
aiming to provide.

Individually, there are many places at which
you can volunteer that will help you decide
whether a career in medicine is right for you.
 Hospitals, nursing homes, hospice
programs, counseling centers, and local
clinics are often in need of volunteers.  You
can fit volunteer work into your school
schedule with as much time devoted to it as
you feel comfortable.

Let the health care professionals that you
volunteer with know that you are interesting
in a career in medicine and many of them
will be glad to take you under their wing to
teach you about their career.  This can be a
good first exposure to medicine.
